Now Watching: Lady Gaga “Joanne” (Piano Version)

Just days before the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, Lady Gaga shared a touching, intimate visual to accompany the title track from her last album Joanne. The stripped-down, performance style video showcases a version of the single comparable to the way she sings it on tour. With the final leg of the Joanne World Tour wrapping up, this is a sweet, beautiful closure to this entire era dedicated to her late aunt, Joanne Germanotta.

While it’s hard to ignore how obviously stunning Lady Gaga looks in the video, my favorite aspect of this release are the subtle changes to the melody of the song. I like that this version has a much slower tempo, and because she’s playing the piano it feels like the music is more structured around the pacing of her words, instead of the other way around. I like the echo effects on the times she says “girl”, and that she incorporated the guitar break from her live show as well.

Tonight, Gaga is up for two awards – one being Best Pop Solo Performance for “Million Reasons”, along with a nomination for Joanne for Best Pop Vocal Album. I was at her show in Atlanta the day she was nominated, and the honor was well deserved as this record was just incredible.

She definitely has some competition, with 2017 being one of the busiest years in music in a long time. However, her story that she’s so generously shared with the world over the past months is surely worth taking home the wins tonight. Regardless, Joanne has been a wonderful experience and I am looking forward seeing her on the show this evening.

Tune into the Grammys tonight at 6:30pm CST, with E! Red carpet coverage 2 hours ahead of the show – starting at 4:30pm CST. After you watch “Joanne”, make sure you check out my videos from the tour in Atlanta and you can read my recap about the Chicago stop, too!

P.S. I’m just putting it out there – this is what I think she will perform. So, you know how Gaga hasn’t performed “Hey Girl” from the album, right? And, you know how Grammy night always has an innovative and unexpected set of “collaborative” performances, right? So, not only do I think Florence Welch will join her for a duet, but I think Elton John will be involved. Gaga is the godmother of Elton’s kids, and does the melody of “Hey Girl” not reminiscent of “Bennie and the Jets”? I’m just sayin – that would be ICONIC. Fingers crossed…
